The Savoy
Grand historic glamour with genuine eccentricity. Think Art Deco gold, Edwardian ivory silk, liveried doormen, and a concierge who can get you into almost anything. This is not a minimalist design hotel — it's a statement. Dress up.
Book a River View suite for the dedicated butler — it's the same person from arrival to departure and genuinely makes the difference.
Why It Matters
Arguably the originator of the modern luxury hotel concept. César Ritz introduced electric lighting and en-suite bathrooms here in the 1890s. The American Bar invented the cocktail culture adopted by every great bar since. Churchill held war cabinet meetings here. The hotel is Grade II listed and a member of Historic Hotels of the World.
Opened in 1889, The Savoy is the hotel that essentially invented modern luxury hospitality — César Ritz ran it, Escoffier cooked in it, and everyone from Churchill to Sinatra slept in it. It sits on a private road off the Strand, one of the few London hotels with genuine Thames frontage (Monet painted the view from here in 1899). Today it's a Fairmont-managed property with 263 rooms and suites split between Edwardian and Art Deco styles, three Gordon Ramsay restaurants, the legendary American Bar, and a wellness floor with an atrium pool. A £220 million restoration was completed in 2010, and a further £45 million room refurbishment programme kicked off in 2024 and runs through 2027.
