The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco
Grand neoclassical city hotel with contemporary interiors. Formal without being stiff. Business crowd during the week, upscale leisure on weekends. Big on service — this is the property that takes the Ritz-Carlton Ladies and Gentlemen ethos seriously.
The cable car stops right outside — use it for the trip back uphill after exploring Chinatown or North Beach on foot
Why It Matters
AAA Five Diamond, 2025 Travel + Leisure World's Best Award, Forbes Travel Guide recognized, and ranked #1 Best San Francisco Hotel by US News & World Report for three consecutive years. The 1909 neoclassical building is a Nob Hill landmark. Home to Spa L'OCCITANE by the Bay and the largest Club Level lounge in San Francisco.
Originally built in 1909 as an insurance company headquarters — once grandly called the 'Temple of Commerce' — this neoclassical landmark on Nob Hill has been a Ritz-Carlton since 1991 and the fit is seamless. The building spans half a city block, all white stone and fluted columns, sitting midway between Union Square and the Financial District with the cable car stopping right at the front door. Inside, 336 rooms are done in crisp whites, deep blues, and rich grays inspired by San Francisco's fog and bay. The Club Level is reportedly the largest full-service Club in the city, effectively functioning as a hotel within a hotel — all-day food and drinks, weekend wine tastings with local wineries, and a dedicated concierge make the room-rate premium feel genuinely justified. No pool, and the steep Nob Hill location can be a workout on foot.

A well-equipped gym open around the clock. Facilities include cardiovascular equipment, treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, stair climbers, free weights, weight machines, and strength equipment. Locker rooms with steam rooms also available. No pool on property.
Weekend afternoon tea in The Lounge celebrating the hotel's 35th anniversary (1991–2026). Features Veuve Clicquot, premium teas, and tea sandwiches and sweets inspired by coral — the anniversary's symbolic color. Runs Saturdays and Sundays from 2–4pm, March 21 through May 31, 2026.
Exclusive to Club Level guests. Weekend tastings featuring award-winning local California wineries, held in the Club Lounge overlooking the San Francisco skyline. Included in the Club Level booking, no additional charge.
The hotel offers complimentary car service for trips within a one-mile radius of the property in the evenings. Useful for reaching nearby restaurants and venues without the uphill return climb.
An exclusive masterclass in wine appreciation led in The Lounge. Guests explore how glass shape influences aroma, balance, and flavor, tasting four wines each served in its own distinct Riedel glass. Guests take home the set of four Riedel glasses used during the session. Concludes with a curated cheese and charcuterie board by Executive Chef George Vanyi. Must be 21+.
A dedicated children's experience program. Includes a special kids-only registration desk, welcome packet with coloring book and scavenger hunt kit (built around four pillars: water, land, culture, and environmental responsibility), dedicated kids menu throughout the property, and customized pre-arrival contact to personalize the stay. Not a babysitting or supervised kids' club — more an enrichment framework that parents manage.
