The Principal Madrid
Sophisticated urban retreat. Think sleek club-meets-penthouse — dark tones, clean lines, good cocktails, and genuine city energy just outside the door. Not stuffy, but polished.
Ask for a room facing the Metropolis building — the art-deco dome view is worth it
Why It Matters
Named #1 Hotel in Spain by Condé Nast Traveller UK and holds a Michelin Key. The Ático restaurant is a destination in its own right, awarded a Repsol Sol. The seventh-floor solarium with panoramic views of the Madrid skyline is genuinely hard to beat in this city.
The Principal Madrid occupies the top floors of a restored 1917 Spanish Renaissance building on the corner of Gran Vía. Reception is on the sixth floor — you enter through a discreet street-level door on Calle Marqués de Valdeiglesias, ride up in a charmingly tiny old-world lift, and emerge into an intimate 76-room hotel with sweeping rooftop views of the Metropolis building and beyond. It's the first 5-star hotel to open on Gran Vía, and it shows: the interiors are polished and monochromatic, with glossy black-tiled bathrooms, brass accents, and leather lounging chairs. But the real draw is upstairs — two terraces, a seventh-floor solarium with 20 scarlet sun loungers and an overflow pool, and the Ático restaurant serving seasonal Spanish cooking with the entire city spread below you.
