The Noblemen
Dark, moody, historically immersive luxury. Think taxidermy cabinets, freestanding copper bathtubs, chandelier guns, and hand-painted ceilings — all grounded in a real 400-year-old staircase. It reads less like a hotel and more like sleeping inside a Dutch Golden Age museum that happens to have Nilson beds and Molton Brown toiletries.
Book the Herman Boerhaave room if you want the private garden and outdoor bathtub — it is ground floor, which means easier access and a genuinely unique garden retreat in the middle of the city
Why It Matters
Every single room is a fully realized world built around one historical figure — down to clock gears cast in epoxy (Christiaan Huygens), a skeleton made of surgical tools (Herman Boerhaave), and a boat-shaped bathtub (Michiel de Ruyter). This is not themed décor; it is original art and antiques repurposed with a specific narrative. No other hotel in Amsterdam does this at this level.
A 17th-century Amsterdam canal house opened as a 13-room boutique hotel in 2021. Each room is dedicated to a different Dutch Golden Age figure — Rembrandt van Rijn, Michiel de Ruyter, Albertus Seba and ten others — with custom-built furniture, original antiques, and ceiling paintings brought to life by Creative Director Stef van der Bijl. The building at Leidsegracht 14 dates to 1666 and original marble from the first owner, a Mediterranean marble merchant, still lines the ground floor.
