Why It Matters

Opened in 1903 as a railway hotel for Midland Railway passengers, The Midland is Manchester's grande dame — a Grade II* listed Edwardian Baroque building in red brick, terracotta and polished granite that has barely missed a beat in over 120 years. Charles Rolls met Henry Royce here in 1904. The Beatles got turned away from the French Restaurant for being underdressed. That kind of place. The public spaces are genuinely imposing: high ceilings, grand staircases, sweeping corridors. The entry-level room at The Midland. Designed primarily for a good night's sleep — functional and comfortable with the hotel's signature decor. En-suite bathroom with bath, shower, and hairdryer. Some reviewers note these can be on the smaller side, and rooms on lower floors may pick up street or tram noise given the listed building's single glazing. Spa facility access on booking-system basis.
