Why It Matters
The first hotel in SoHo and the property that essentially invented the NYC loft hotel genre. Christian Liaigre's interiors remain exclusive to the building. The fashion and film industry have claimed it as their Manhattan base since the late '90s and still do. Sartiano's — run by Zero Bond founder Scott Sartiano with James Beard Award-winning chef Alfred Portale — replaced the legendary Jean-Georges Mercer Kitchen in 2023 and quickly became a destination in its own right.
SoHo's original five-star hotel, open since 1997 in an 1890 Romanesque Revival building originally built for John Jacob Astor III. French designer Christian Liaigre transformed it into 73 loft-style rooms with high ceilings and earthy minimalism. The hotel runs without a brand flag and keeps it that way intentionally — no loyalty points, no corporate energy. The lobby is private for guests only, Sartiano's modern Italian restaurant draws a downtown crowd, and the whole operation is built around discretion.

Positioned at the front corner of the building, it overlooks both Prince and Mercer Streets. At 1,000 sq ft it's one of the most spacious single-bedroom options in the hotel. The most outdoor-focused room in the hotel. French doors open onto the suite's own 1,000 sq ft private terrace overlooking the courtyard. Inside, 11-foot ceilings, a generously scaled living room with wet bar and dining area, walk-in closet, and a marble bathroom with double sinks, separate soaking tub, and walk-in shower.

Larger studio configuration with views of Prince Street, Mercer Street, or the private courtyard. High ceilings and large windows are the defining features. A good mid-tier option before stepping up to the full loft suites.

The step up that makes a real difference. King bed, seating area that doubles as a workspace or dining spot, and views of Mercer or Prince Street. Many units have exposed brick. Marble bathroom with a large walk-in shower; select studios have an oversized soaking tub.
