The Madrona
Victorian grandeur meets maximalist California cool — dark moody parlors, eclectic art on every wall, fireplaces in most rooms, and lush estate gardens that feel genuinely wild. Not a spa retreat or a minimalist wine country barn. This place has personality, opinions, and an excellent cocktail program.
Book a Bungalow Suite or Carriage House room if noise is a concern — the Mansion's position above the restaurant means sound carries upward
Why It Matters
Recipient of Two Michelin Keys (2024 and 2025) and named one of Michelin's 10 Most Beautiful Hotels in California for 2025. Featured on Condé Nast Hot List, T+L It List, T+L Top 100 in the World and Top 15 in the USA, and Esquire's Best New Hotels. Designed by Jay Jeffers. Restaurant led by Michelin-starred chef Jesse Mallgren. The property is also a registered historic building — structural changes during renovation were limited, which gives it genuine character but also means some rooms are genuinely dark.
The Madrona is the complete transformation of the 1881 Aesthetic Movement mansion formerly known as Madrona Manor — an ornate three-story Victorian pile perched on a forested hilltop overlooking Dry Creek Valley, about a mile west of downtown Healdsburg. Interior designer Jay Jeffers packed the 24-room, six-building property with maximalist, globally influenced decor, a curated art collection from Dolby Chadwick Gallery, and half an acre of working gardens that feed the acclaimed all-day restaurant. Two Michelin Keys in 2024 and 2025 confirm it's the most serious hospitality offering in Sonoma wine country right now.
