Leatherflower's ricotta French toast at breakfast has developed a cult following — order it

Why It Matters

Voted #1 Resort in the U.S. South by Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. Hosts one of the largest telescopes and observatories in the eastern United States. The Donald Steel-designed Highland Course is ranked the #1 public golf course in Virginia by Golf Digest. Tree houses were designed by French firm La Cabane Perchée and perch above the Dan River Gorge at 2,700 feet. Leatherflower earned Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence in 2024.

Primland sits on 12,000 private acres in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains at 2,700 feet elevation — and the scale of it genuinely takes a moment to process. The main Lodge anchors the estate with a soaring Great Hall, twin stone fireplaces, and a two-story wine cellar, but most of the action spreads far across forested ridges to tree houses, cottages, and mountain homes. It's the kind of place where you can go from a professional stargazing session at one of the eastern US's largest observatories to a guided fly-fishing stretch on the Dan River to a fine-dining dinner at Leatherflower — all without leaving the property.
