Lalu Qingdao
Minimalist Zen meets Confucian literati culture. The aesthetic borrows from the same Kerry Hill playbook used at Aman properties across Asia: logs, granite, glass, and oxidized copper. The building's dark red facade is designed to resemble stacked shipping containers, a nod to Qingdao's port identity. Corridors are lined with lacquerware, calligraphy, and paintings. A copy of the thread-bound Analects of Confucius sits in every room.
The undersea tunnel puts Qingdao's old European quarter and beach area only about 10 minutes away by car — the remote feel is somewhat deceptive.
Why It Matters
The first mainland venture from the Taiwan Shining Group, which built one of Asia's most iconic hotels at Sun Moon Lake. Kerry Hill's total site footprint spans over 1.5 million square feet. The all-suite concept — no standard rooms whatsoever — positions this as genuinely low-density luxury. The wine bar at Rendez-vous reportedly has the longest island bar in Asia, with bottles stacked floor to double-height ceiling.
The Lalu Qingdao is the first mainland China property from Taiwan's Shining Group, the same people behind the celebrated Lalu Sun Moon Lake. Designed by Kerry Hill Architects, it sits on a peninsula in Qingdao's Huangdao District with the Yellow Sea on three sides and Phoenix Mountain at its back. Every one of its 161 rooms is a suite of at least 100 sqm, and every single one has a 180-degree ocean view.
