The George In Rye
Historic character meets relaxed-chic boutique. Eclectic and individual, not stuffy. Think antique writing bureaus next to Florence Broadhurst textiles, tin rolltop baths in one room, copper ones in the next.
You can't reserve specific room numbers, but you can add a special request at booking — worth doing to specify a preference for a roll-top bath or quieter courtyard-facing room.
Why It Matters
One of the few genuinely historic inns in England that has been updated with real design conviction. Named in The Sunday Times Top 10 Most Romantic Hotels and The Times 100 Best Places to Stay in Britain 2023. Has hosted three King Georges and the Duke of Wellington. The original Georgian ballroom alone is worth the trip.
A Grade II listed coaching inn built in 1575, right on the cobbled high street of medieval Rye. The George has been thoughtfully renovated to blend its Elizabethan bones — sloping floors, galley beams, an original Georgian ballroom — with genuinely eclectic, contemporary design. Antique furniture sits alongside modern art. Roll-top baths share rooms with proper walk-in showers. It's informal and individual without trying too hard.
