The George
English country-house meets downtown industrial. Layered grays, exposed brick, coffered wood-paneled walls, crystal chandeliers, stained-glass windows, and marble fireplaces — all anchored by Bobbi Brown's sharp collector's eye. Serious design credentials without a stiff atmosphere. You'll feel fine in jeans or a blazer.
Ask about the candy closet — it's not advertised but it's stocked shelf-to-ceiling with chocolate and sweets
Why It Matters
The first hotel to open in Montclair since the 1930s. Founded by makeup mogul Bobbi Brown (who dove in literally the day after leaving her namesake cosmetics brand) and her husband, developer Steven Plofker. Featured in Vogue, Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Forbes, and Elle Decor. Recognized by the Michelin Guide. The 1902 building holds landmark status and was restored with obsessive attention to original details — stained glass, grand staircase, original fireplaces — while being fully modernized with top-tier brand partnerships.
The George is Bobbi Brown's first hotel — a 31-room boutique in a landmarked 1902 mansion on a quiet Montclair side street. Brown left her cosmetics empire in 2016 and the very next day started work on this place. The result feels less like a hotel and more like staying in a beautifully curated friend's home: exposed brick, gas fireplaces, Casper mattresses, SMEG mini-fridges, and one-off photographs hanging throughout. Every room has its own name and theme — stay in the Jack room and you'll find photos of Nicholson, Black, and Robinson on the walls. No on-site restaurant and no liquor license, but breakfast is complimentary daily and the nightly wine hour in the wood-paneled library is a genuine highlight.

The Montclair Art Museum — with a notable collection of American and Native American art — is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Staff can advise on current exhibitions.
Complimentary wine, beer, and snacks served nightly in the historic wood-paneled library from 7 to 9 PM. Fireplace lit in cooler months. Board games available. A genuine social hour, not just a pass-through.
Walnut Street and Bay Street NJ Transit stations are a short walk away. Trains to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan run several times daily, taking 50–60 minutes each way. The hotel makes a solid NYC base without Manhattan prices.
