Fontenay
Lakeside contemporary luxury. Think clean modernist architecture, natural light everywhere, parquet floors, organic curved shapes, and a hushed city-resort atmosphere. No gold filigree — just very good materials and very attentive staff.
Book a Deluxe Alster Lake View room or higher if Alster views matter — the standard Deluxe room faces the park/Rotherbaum district, not the lake
Why It Matters
Germany's only 5-star lakeside city hotel with a two-Michelin-star restaurant on-site. It holds three Michelin Keys (hotel recognition), is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, and was ranked 1st in Northern Europe by Condé Nast Traveller in October 2025. The rooftop spa with its indoor-outdoor infinity pool overlooking Lake Alster is genuinely one of a kind in Germany.
The Fontenay opened in March 2018 on the eastern shore of Hamburg's Outer Alster Lake — a sculptural all-glass building shaped from three interlocking circles, with no defined rear façade. Architect Jan Störmer called it a 'Hotel in the Park,' and it earns that description: over 50 mature trees (including 250-year-old oriental plane trees) surround the property, while a 27-metre glazed atrium floods the interior with daylight. Inside, 130 rooms and suites, a two-Michelin-star restaurant on the 7th floor, and a 1,000 m² rooftop spa make this the most complete luxury address in Hamburg. But here is the thing — the tone is Hanseatic, not flashy. The service is warm without being fussy, and everything from the curved sofa in the atrium to the trapezoid-shaped rooms feels considered rather than showy.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Seasonal afternoon tea crafted by chef-pâtissier Marco D'Andrea. Served Thursday to Sunday from 2pm to 5pm in the 27-metre glazed atrium.
An 8 km dedicated trail circles the Outer Alster lake right from the hotel's front door. Flat, well-maintained, and one of the most scenic urban runs in Germany — boats on the water, parks on one side, Hamburg's skyline in the distance.
The Alster Wanderweg is a dedicated hiking trail that circles the city. The hotel sits directly on it.
Hotel provides bicycle rental for guests to explore the Alster promenade and surrounding Hamburg neighbourhoods.
Outdoor yoga sessions are held weekly in the hotel grounds during summer months. Open to all levels.
Adjacent to the Atrium Lounge, the library holds 1,000+ carefully curated books selected in partnership with Hamburg's historic Felix Jud bookshop. A genuine reading room, not a decorative one.
Lake Alster sits directly in front of the hotel. Canoeing and other water sports can be accessed from the waterfront.
