The Fearrington House Inn
English countryside meets Southern hospitality — floral prints, antiques, individually decorated rooms, garden courtyards, and a warm, family-run feel that prioritizes genuine service over hotel-lobby grandeur.
Book the restaurant when you book the room — it's open Thursday through Sunday only, and tables fill up fast. The bar is a great fallback if the dining room is full.
Why It Matters
One of the South's most storied Relais & Châteaux properties, in operation since 1986 and holding AAA Five Diamond status. The restaurant has been a fine dining anchor for over 45 years, and the legendary hot chocolate soufflé — created by founder Jenny Fitch and chef Edna Lewis — has never left the menu. Michelin Guide selected.
Built on a 1770s dairy farm eight miles south of Chapel Hill, The Fearrington House Inn is a 32-room Relais & Châteaux property that still has rare Belted Galloway cows grazing the pastures. The surrounding village of boutiques, an indie bookstore, a spa, and a Michelin-recommended fine dining restaurant make this a proper destination stay, not just a place to sleep. Think English countryside meets the North Carolina Piedmont — understated elegance, fresh flowers cut from the inn's own gardens, and port wine waiting at turndown.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Seasonal sweet and savory tea service in The Fearrington House dining room. Thursday through Sunday, 12–3pm. Available to inn guests and the public.
The property's original Belted Galloway cows ('Oreo cows') still graze the pastures throughout the village. The barnyard also has Tennessee fainting goats, chickens, donkeys, and bees. Free to wander and observe — you can see them from the bar terrace at dusk.
Complimentary e-bikes available for inn guests to borrow for rides through the village paths and surrounding countryside.
A private courtyard retreat for inn guests. Fireplace in winter, chess boards, and a cozy reading-friendly setup. Good alternative to the bar if you want something quiet.
The English-inspired gardens at the heart of the village include sculpted hedges, seasonal flower beds, a granite fountain, brick pathways, and a hedge maze. Inspired by co-founder Jenny Fitch, they're maintained beautifully year-round.
Live music every Wednesday and Saturday, 5–7pm, at Galloway's Wine & Beer Bar. A fixture of village evenings.
One of the South's most beloved independent bookstores, open in the village since 1989. Expert staff recommendations, curated selection, and regular author events. A legitimate reason to plan a whole afternoon here.
Inn guests only, open May through September. Complimentary towels and bottled water provided. Picnic orders available from The Belted Goat.
Weekly farmers' market in the village on Tuesdays. Local produce, goods, and vendors.
Free Saturday wine tastings at Galloway's Wine Shop from 1–3pm. Curated by Wine Director Troy Revell.
