The Equinox Resort
Classic New England resort grandeur. White clapboard columns, green shutters, wood-paneled bars, stone fireplaces. Not a design hotel — this is traditional, historic, and unapologetically Vermont. Serious golfers and outdoor adventurers fit in perfectly, as do couples who just want a spa weekend with good whisky nearby.
Book spa appointments well before arrival — the resort recommends calling ahead and treatments fill up fast on weekends
Why It Matters
One of New England's oldest continuously operating hotels, AAA Four Diamond rated, with a par-71 Walter Travis/Rees Jones golf course, a Land Rover off-road driving school on property, and Orvis fly fishing and wingshooting instruction — not the typical resort amenity list.
The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa sits right in the center of Manchester Village — a stately white-columned property that dates back to 1769, when the original Marsh Tavern served as a gathering spot for Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys. It has hosted U.S. presidents and has been a Vermont institution for over 250 years. Today it's a full-on four-season resort: championship golf, a 13,000 sq ft spa, four dining outlets, and access to 914 acres of mountain preserve trails. And yes, you can drive a Land Rover through the mountains or fly-fish with Orvis instructors right on property.
