Why It Matters
Newly built in 2024 on one of Amsterdam's most storied squares, the hotel revives the legendary Heineken Hoek café — beloved since the late 1950s for its rooftop beer-glass billboard — while wrapping it in a contemporary gem-inspired shell. The building's design is a direct homage to the Koh-I-Noor diamond, which was cut in Amsterdam in 1852. It's one of the few genuinely new-build luxury boutique hotels in the city centre in recent memory.
The Diamond opened in November 2024 on Leidseplein — Amsterdam's theatre and entertainment square — in a newly built glass building designed by architect Roberto Meyer of MVSA Architects and inspired by the famous Koh-I-Noor diamond. The façade is clad in deep glass layers that literally shimmer and shift throughout the day; at night, the whole building lights up like a gemstone. Inside, 36 rooms are compact but seriously well-appointed, with warm earth tones, curated reclaimed furniture, and retro Marshall bedside radios. The on-site Heineken Hoek Grand Café is an iconic Amsterdam institution that has returned to its original Leidseplein home as part of the hotel.

How you'll actually spend your days.
In the basement of the same building, Basement is an intimate house-and-disco focused club with a custom Funktion One sound system. Operates Friday and Saturday nights. No VIP areas or bottle service — just good music in a small, raw space. Separately operated from the hotel but accessible from within the building.
Bicycles available for rent directly at the hotel — the most Amsterdam way to explore the city. Rijksmuseum, Vondelpark, and the Canal District are all within easy cycling distance.
Hotel concierge can arrange museum tickets, tours, and other city experiences. Given the location — surrounded by the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and Stedelijk — this is a genuinely useful service.
