The Crown Amersham
Cosy country pub meets modern coaching inn — unfussy, characterful, rural without being precious
Courtyard Suite 101 is the Four Weddings room — worth asking for if it's available
Why It Matters
Famous for its cameo in Four Weddings and a Funeral (the Queen Elizabeth I suite, now Courtyard Suite 101, is where Hugh Grant first kissed Andie MacDowell). Interiors by Ilse Crawford. Hawkyns restaurant by twice Michelin-starred Atul Kochhar on site. Michelin Guide listed. End of the Metropolitan Line, so technically accessible from central London without a car.
A Grade II listed coaching inn that has stood on Old Amersham's medieval High Street since 1620. Designer Ilse Crawford overhauled the interiors to create what she called a 'new English vernacular' — whitewashed walls, Welsh wool blankets, Ercol chairs, coir carpet, twisted oak beams, and the odd 16th-century mural. The result is a hotel that feels genuinely old without feeling musty. Add Hawkyns restaurant (helmed by twice Michelin-starred Atul Kochhar), a cobbled courtyard, and a log-fire bar pouring locally brewed Rebellion ale, and you have a proper Chilterns destination just 45 minutes from London Marylebone.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Dozens of scenic walking trails run directly from Old Amersham through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hotel can supply wellies. Day walks to nearby villages such as Little Missenden and Chenies are well-worn routes.
A croquet lawn is set up behind the hotel during summer. Classic English country-house experience — guests are free to use it.
Disraeli's country home in High Wycombe, managed by the National Trust. A short drive away — Victorian stately rooms and riverside parkland.
Amersham is the western terminus of the Metropolitan line. Baker Street is roughly 50 minutes away by tube. An easy option for guests who want a cultural day in London without changing hotels.
