Why It Matters

One of London's oldest continuously operating luxury hotels (est. 1887), with genuine literary history: Oscar Wilde was arrested in Room 118, which is now preserved as the Oscar Suite. The hotel's position at the three-way junction of Chelsea, Knightsbridge, and Belgravia is genuinely hard to beat for access to both Harrods and the King's Road.

The Cadogan opened in 1887 and has the kind of history most hotels just borrow for marketing copy. Oscar Wilde was actually arrested here — room 118, now called the Oscar Suite. Lillie Langtry lived next door at 21 Pont Street, and her private entrance still exists as a discreet side door for hotel guests. Belmond took over the property and gave it a proper refresh, sitting it at the junction of Chelsea, Belgravia, and Knightsbridge: 54 rooms, a new British bistro (Willett's, opened April 2026), a spa suite, and exclusive access to Cadogan Place Gardens across the street.

The Oscar Suite

The grandest suite in the hotel and its most storied room. The bedroom is marked 118 — the room where Oscar Wilde was arrested in 1895. It's been preserved and celebrated rather than sanitised: guests find Wilde's favourite drink ready, a copy of Ancient Egypt (one of his passions), his preferred velvet slippers, and a silk eye mask. High ceilings, an expansive marble bathroom with garden views from the bathtub, an immaculate living room, and a dining space. Bold, theatrical, genuinely special.
