Tom and Michaela Kitchin took a village inn built in 1836 — previously called the Golf Hotel — and turned it into something that quietly punches above its weight. It bills itself as a pub, restaurant, and rooms, which is technically accurate but doesn't capture the reality: 12 individually designed bedrooms plus a master suite kitted out with Hypnos mattresses, Mairi Helena wallpaper, Siabann bath products, and marble bathrooms with heated floors. The food is the main event, driven by a rigorous 'From Nature to Plate' philosophy: meat arrives whole in fur and feathers, fish and shellfish are prepped daily, and the kitchen team forages locally for herbs and mushrooms. Thirty minutes from Edinburgh, yet it feels a world away.

Slightly larger than the standard Deluxe and perched on the top floor of the main house, these rooms earn their keep with panoramic countryside views from furnished window seats. King-size Hypnos bed, Mairi Helena wallpaper, Laura Thomas linens, marble bathroom with walk-in shower, and Siabann toiletries — same quality as below, just with a better view. Families can book both loft rooms together to take the entire top floor.

The entry-level rooms here are still genuinely lovely. Located in either the main house or the Hazel or Honeysuckle cottages adjacent to the garden, each features a super-king bed (convertible to twins on request) with a Hypnos mattress and Laura Thomas linens from North Berwick. Walls are dressed in custom Mairi Helena wallpaper — heather pinks and East Lothian blues. The marble ensuite has a walk-in shower, heated floors, and Siabann handmade bath products. TV, Nespresso machine, free WiFi, and bottled water included. At 193 sq ft, they're compact but thoughtfully packed.

The quietest and most light-filled rooms in the house, set in the Honeysuckle cottage at the back of the garden. Each has its own private patio with a table and chairs — great for a morning coffee outside the city fuss. Larger than the Deluxe at 269 sq ft, with a king-size Hypnos bed, same Scottish textile programme, and marble ensuite with walk-in shower. Dog-friendly on request.

The top room in the house and a serious step up. At 516 sq ft, the Ridge Suite sits in the main house and leads with bottle-green walls, a king four-poster Hypnos bed, and a freestanding egg-shaped bathtub placed dramatically in the separate lounge area — not hidden in the bathroom. The marble ensuite has twin sinks and a walk-in shower. Mairi Helena wallpaper in heather pinks and inky blues, Laura Thomas linens, Siabann bath products, Nespresso, heated floors. This is the one for anniversaries, honeymoons, or anyone who just wants to feel properly indulged.
