Blonde Hedgehog
Rustic-elegant island retreat with strong eco credentials. Exposed stone, freestanding baths, live-edge tables under a vaulted skylight, and a dining room described as the colour of Alderney marshland. Think SoHo House warmth transplanted to a windswept Channel Island — genuinely warm and personal, never stuffy.
Book the restaurant ahead — locals fill it up fast, especially Sunday lunch. Don't assume you can walk in.
Why It Matters
The only luxury boutique hotel on one of Europe's most remote and least-visited Channel Islands. Named for the actual blonde hedgehogs endemic to Alderney — first shipped over from Harrods, legend has it — the property is plastic-free, composts its kitchen waste, sources nearly everything on-island, and works closely with the Alderney Wildlife Trust. Its Michelin-mentioned restaurant has a daily-changing menu built entirely around what local farmers and fishermen bring in that morning.
The Blonde Hedgehog is a luxury boutique hotel spread across four beautifully restored 18th-century buildings on the cobblestone high street of St. Anne — the only town on tiny Alderney, the northernmost of the Channel Islands. Founded by philanthropist and entrepreneur Julie-Anne Uggla, who stumbled onto the island when bad weather forced her plane to land, the hotel now spans the original inn, adjoining Clarence House, the Old Corner House cottage, and the La Frette farmhouse set in 3.5 acres just a four-minute walk away. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Guide mention and become a genuine local favourite; guests frequently fly from the mainland specifically to eat here.
