The Battery
Dark, moody, bohemian — part Hellfire Club, part San Francisco salon. Soho House is the most common comparison, but The Battery skews older, more eccentric, and far more discreet. Photography is banned throughout, phone calls are confined to designated areas, and business chat is gently frowned upon.
Breakfast is not included in the room rate — budget for it at Woolsery
Why It Matters
One of the most genuinely unusual hotels in the US: a real, invitation-only private club that opens its doors to the public via 14 suites. Holders of 2 Michelin Keys. Five floors, six bars, a 1,600-bottle wine cellar, a full-service spa, a gym, an art collection with rotating exhibitions, and a rooftop penthouse with a hot tub and fire pit. The turndown service includes freshly baked chocolate chip cookies topped with Maldon salt.
The Battery is a private members' club with 14 hotel suites inside a 58,000-square-foot former marble factory (the old Musto Factory) in San Francisco's Jackson Square. Founded in 2013 by tech entrepreneurs Michael and Xochi Birch and designed throughout by Ken Fulk, the place feels genuinely theatrical: patterned wallpapers, leopard-print chairs, a pink piano, surrealist furniture, and original art stacked floor to ceiling. Book a room and you're automatically a Resident Member for your stay — full access, no nomination required.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The Battery runs an active events calendar covering arts, humanities, technology, and philanthropy. Hotel guests as Resident Members have access to member events (subject to ticket or RSVP availability). The Parlor hosts talks, workshops, and film screenings.
Fully equipped on-site gym available to hotel guests throughout their stay.
The Library Bar hosts live jazz alongside its cocktail and small plates service, typically in the evening hours. The intimate pink-walled space makes it one of the more surreal jazz venues in the city.
The Battery's walls throughout all five floors are hung with works by notable contemporary artists and photographers. Private tours of the collection can be arranged — ask the concierge. The club also hosts frequent exhibitions showcasing contemporary art with member previews and Q&As.
The custom oak wine cellar — crafted from reclaimed wine barrels with a cork ceiling and a chandelier hung with the club's most storied bottles — can be booked for intimate private dinners. The 1,600+ bottle list is one of the more serious collections in the city.
