Terhills Hotel
Industrial heritage meets modern boutique luxury. Baroque architecture, symmetrical French garden, high ceilings, and thoughtful mining-era details throughout. Equally at home for a romantic weekend or a corporate off-site.
Ask for a Superior room or Suite with garden view — the French garden and fountain are the hotel's best visual asset
Why It Matters
One of Belgium's most architecturally distinctive boutique hotels — a converted colliery headquarters with intact historical character, sitting directly on the Hoge Kempen National Park boundary. The Michelin Guide lists it. Bistro Bureau Bouveau, opened March 2024, added serious culinary credibility.
Terhills Hotel lives inside the former Coal Castle of the Eisden mine — a neoclassical baroque building that hasn't lost a shred of its grandeur since the coal mines closed in 1987. Opened as a hotel in 2015, the 4-star, 59-room property sits right at the main entrance to Belgium's only national park, Hoge Kempen, with Maasmechelen Village outlet shopping literally 100 metres from the front door. The interior is full of deliberate nods to mining history: a staircase slightly warped by underground subsidence, a vault door (the old miners' pay office) that now leads to the toilets, and a breakfast room designed as a tribute to miners' cottages.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel sits on the well-signed Limburg cycling route network. Bike rental is available on the Terhills site. Routes lead directly into Hoge Kempen National Park. The 'Cycling between Terrils' experience offers a 360° view from a floating bridge over the water.
The hotel's symmetrical French garden is available for group activities: fencing, yoga, boot camp, Highland Games, and even a firewalking experience (coal-walking — a nod to the mining past). For corporate groups.
Belgium's only national park starts literally at the hotel's front gate (50 metres away). Hours of walking trails through heathland, forests, and past mining terrils (slag heaps) with panoramic views from the top. Free to access.
The Bicester Collection designer outlet is 100 metres from the hotel entrance. Open 7 days a week. Over 100 fashion brands at outlet prices along a fully pedestrianised boulevard. The 'Shop till you drop' hotel package (from €175) includes a Maasmechelen Village goodie bag.
On the Terhills site. Wake boarding, water skiing, and an Aquapark for climbing and scrambling. Suitable for all levels. Popular team-building option.
Hotel guests can access the facilities of the neighbouring Terhills Resort by Center Parcs — a premium resort set in nature. Available for day visits.
