The Sayo suite has a private 52-inch plasma TV theater room with a B&O sound system — rare for a traditional ryokan

Why It Matters

One of Japan's most celebrated onsen ryokans. Built in 1998, it sits on its own private hot spring source (68.1°C at the wellhead) and runs all 30 baths as pure kakenagashi — no circulation, no chemicals, no dilution. It's also home to five dedicated in-house pastry chefs for just 12 rooms, and the kaiseki dinner menu changes monthly.

Takefue is a 12-room luxury ryokan on a 16,500 sq m bamboo estate in Kumamoto's Shirakawa Onsen area. Every room has its own private open-air hot spring fed directly from the ryokan's own volcanic source — all 30 baths flow 100% unheated, undiluted onsen water. The vibe is deep-forest rustic: dark timber beams, straw-and-plaster walls, irori (sunken hearth fireplaces), and tatami, but with modern comforts like Aesop toiletries and stone-ground coffee makers in each room.
