Why It Matters
One of Sardinia's most storied rural hotels, famous long before inland Sardinia was on the tourist map. The restaurant alone draws day-trippers from across the island. The property functions as part hotel, part folk museum, part craft school — with working art studios (Le Botteghe di Su Gologone) producing the textiles and furniture that fill the rooms.
Su Gologone is a family-owned rural resort at the foot of the Supramonte mountains in Sardinia's Barbagia region, about 10km outside the town of Oliena. It started life as a restaurant and the food obsession never left — owner Giovanna Palimodde has turned the whole property into a living showcase of Sardinian art, craft, and cuisine across 69 rooms spread through whitewashed buildings, gardens, arcades, and stone alleys. Think antique juniper wood beams, hand-woven textiles, ceramics everywhere, and a fireplace big enough to roast half a pig.

Art Junior Suite
Wide room with a separate living area, dedicated to 20th-century Sardinian artists like Federico Melis, Giuseppe Biasi, and Edina Altara. All have a balcony with a shower or Jacuzzi option; some have a bathtub on the terrace. Named after the artist who inspired the room's decor.

Art Studio Villa
The standout accommodation on the property — this was once the owner's personal atelier. Completely separate from the main hotel in its own private rose garden with a courtyard. Comes equipped with art supplies, an easel, and canvas. The outdoor double bathtub in the courtyard is the signature feature. If you're going to splurge, this is the one.
Art Suite
Two separate areas — a double or twin bedroom plus a living area with a terrace overlooking garden, mountains, or valley. Some have a fireplace in the living area. The bathroom upgrades to a whirlpool bath or hydromassage shower with sauna. Every suite is individually decorated, so photos are indicative only.

The Deluxe with a twist — a wide private terrace that comes with an outdoor bathtub. Great for a private soak with garden surroundings. Same craft-heavy interior as the standard Deluxe rooms.

A step up in size from Classic, with the same Sardinian craft aesthetic — antique furniture, traditional fabrics and carpets, juniper wood beams, and individual artworks. Garden or courtyard views. Some have a small balcony with mountain views.

Two Country Suites that lean heavily into the Barbagia aesthetic — masonry beds, orbace wool, leather, local carved wood, fireplace (in one unit). Private terrace onto the aromatic herb garden with an outdoor tub and hammock. The most 'lodged in Sardinia' feeling of any room category.
Experience Wild Suite
The most secluded suite category, designed for guests who want a deeper connection with the natural landscape around the hotel. Limited detail available on the official site, but positioned as the property's most immersive nature-facing accommodation.
Junior Suite Deluxe
The Deluxe version of the Junior Suite, with mountain or garden views from all units and a bathtub for two in the lounge area or on the terrace. Slightly more space and elevated finishes compared to the Art Junior Suite.

The hotel's working craft studios — Le Botteghe di Su Gologone — offer one-on-one instruction and group classes in traditional Sardinian crafts including weaving, ceramics, and painting. These are the same studios that produce the textiles and furniture in the hotel rooms. One of the most distinctive offerings in the property.
Weekly stargazing sessions on the Terrazza dei Sogni. The hotel's mountain setting away from urban light pollution makes this genuinely spectacular. The adjacent Terrazza dei Desideri lets guests write wishes on strips of paper to drop into blown-glass bottles.
The hotel regularly hosts temporary art exhibitions by Sardinian artists throughout the property.
The hotel arranges visits to traditional Barbagia goat herders in the surrounding mountains, with lunch on cured meats and fresh cheeses. One of the more memorable half-day excursions on offer.
