Su Gologone
Folk-art immersion meets mountain retreat. Maximalist Sardinian craft aesthetic — every surface has a painting, textile, or ceramic. Warm and family-spirited rather than sleek or minimalist.
Request a table on the edge of the terrace overlooking the pool on warm evenings — it's the best seat in the house at dinner.
Why It Matters
One of Sardinia's most storied rural hotels, famous long before inland Sardinia was on the tourist map. The restaurant alone draws day-trippers from across the island. The property functions as part hotel, part folk museum, part craft school — with working art studios (Le Botteghe di Su Gologone) producing the textiles and furniture that fill the rooms.
Su Gologone is a family-owned rural resort at the foot of the Supramonte mountains in Sardinia's Barbagia region, about 10km outside the town of Oliena. It started life as a restaurant and the food obsession never left — owner Giovanna Palimodde has turned the whole property into a living showcase of Sardinian art, craft, and cuisine across 69 rooms spread through whitewashed buildings, gardens, arcades, and stone alleys. Think antique juniper wood beams, hand-woven textiles, ceramics everywhere, and a fireplace big enough to roast half a pig.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel's working craft studios — Le Botteghe di Su Gologone — offer one-on-one instruction and group classes in traditional Sardinian crafts including weaving, ceramics, and painting. These are the same studios that produce the textiles and furniture in the hotel rooms. One of the most distinctive offerings in the property.
Weekly stargazing sessions on the Terrazza dei Sogni. The hotel's mountain setting away from urban light pollution makes this genuinely spectacular. The adjacent Terrazza dei Desideri lets guests write wishes on strips of paper to drop into blown-glass bottles.
The hotel regularly hosts temporary art exhibitions by Sardinian artists throughout the property.
The hotel arranges visits to traditional Barbagia goat herders in the surrounding mountains, with lunch on cured meats and fresh cheeses. One of the more memorable half-day excursions on offer.
Hands-on traditional Sardinian cooking instruction, including bread-making in the old wood-fired oven (The Nest of Bread experience).
Tastings in the hotel's wine cellars, focusing on Sardinian wines including the local Oliena Cannonau and Vermentino.
Occasional film screenings for guests on the property.
Horse riding excursions in the Supramonte area, organized through the hotel.
Off-road excursions into the surrounding mountains and countryside organized through the hotel.
Cycling routes through the Supramonte countryside. Bicycles available at the hotel.
Guided and self-guided hiking trails from the hotel door — the Supramonte mountains offer everything from a flat loop to the Su Gologone springs (about 8 miles) to a summit hike up Punta La Marmora, the highest peak in Sardinia at 1,834m. Hotel provides maps and trail information at reception.
Mini golf course on the hotel grounds.
On-site tennis court available to guests.
25-metre outdoor pool fed by the natural Su Gologone spring — cold and unheated. Surrounded by grass and sunloungers. Lifeguard on duty each morning and afternoon. Seasonal operation.
