Stora Hotellet
Maritime heritage boutique with genuine character — dark woods, velvet upholstery, nautical symbolism done with wit rather than cliché. Equal parts history and playfulness.
Ask specifically for a room with an Umeälven river view when booking — not all rooms have it and it's worth it
Why It Matters
One of the few genuine boutique hotels this far north in Sweden, with a continuous story going back to 1895 and a design concept that tells it honestly. Selected by Tablet Hotels (now part of the MICHELIN Guide). Green Key eco-certified.
Stora Hotellet is Umeå's oldest and most characterful hotel — a former seaman's mission and lodging house that opened in October 1895, right on the Umeälven riverfront when the city's shipping industry was booming. It reopened in 2014 following a major renovation timed to Umeå's year as European Capital of Culture, and now leans fully into its maritime heritage: 82 rooms divided into six sailor-themed categories (names like 'Superstition', 'Adventure', 'Freedom'), a restaurant named after the hotel's first director, and a new attic staircase built from shipwreck wood found in storage. The building is integrated with Väven, Umeå's modern cultural arena, which means you're steps from a cinema, library, and artisan bakery without leaving the block.

Bicycle hire is available, with cycling routes accessible from the hotel's central location.
The city park adjacent to the hotel is a popular area for walks and light outdoor activity, with views back to the hotel's historic facade.
A guest library inside the hotel, always open, named in tribute to 19th-century doctor Daniel Erik Næzén and the health spa that once occupied the building. Great for quiet reading time with some atmospheric history.
The Umeälven riverfront is right outside the hotel — a popular route for morning runs and walks, accessible year-round. The hotel's own website recommends it as the perfect spot for a morning run.
The hotel is physically integrated with Väven, Umeå's modern cultural arena. Cinema, Umeå City Library, and various cafés and restaurants are all accessible without going outside.
