Inselhotel
Historic grandeur with working hotel functionality. Grand monastery architecture, a preserved Gothic cloister with original 13th-century frescoes, and a lakeside lawn for sunbathing. Not a boutique — this is a full-service property with conference rooms, multiple dining venues, and 100+ rooms across a range of categories.
Always request a lake-view room — courtyard rooms are perfectly fine but miss the point of staying here
Why It Matters
One of very few hotels in Europe occupying a genuine 13th-century Dominican monastery on its own private island. The Zeppelin Bar is built in the former church vestry where Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was born. The Jan Hus Tower Suite references the pre-Reformation reformer who stood trial at the nearby Council of Constance. Hotel since 1874; Steigenberger since 1966.
A genuine piece of European history that actually functions as a hotel. This 13th-century Dominican monastery sits on its own tiny private island in Lake Constance — three minutes' walk to Konstanz's old town — and has been welcoming guests since 1874. The Gothic cloister frescoes are real, not reproductions. Lake-facing rooms deliver unobstructed views of the water and the distant Alps; the summer breakfast terrace is the kind of thing that's hard to do justice to in photos.
