Why It Matters

This is arguably the most dramatic hotel building in London. The original Midland Grand Hotel opened in 1873 as a Gothic Revival masterpiece designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott — complete with soaring vaulted ceilings, a sweeping Grand Staircase, and enough ornate red brick to fill a Victorian fever dream. It closed in 1935, sat as abandoned offices for decades, and reopened in 2011 after a heroic restoration.
