Sonolux Montreal
Serious contemporary art space that also happens to have hotel rooms. Dark, quiet, deliberate. Not for families looking for fun or business travelers wanting a gym. The vibe is closer to a well-curated Montréal gallery than a boutique lifestyle hotel.
The TV in your room streams artwork from the current exhibition — don't just use it for Netflix
Why It Matters
The first contemporary art hotel in all of Quebec. Housed in a landmarked 1914 heritage building, with a purpose-built AV system by Solotech (the same company behind Taylor Swift's Eras Tour). Architecture by Geiger Huot, interiors by Zabb Design. Featured in Esquire's Best New Hotels in the World 2026 and the Michelin Guide.
SonoLux is Quebec's first contemporary art hotel, opened November 26, 2025 inside the 1914 neo-classical National Trust Building in Old Montreal. It's 36 rooms across eight floors, and every inch of common space is a functioning gallery — rotating video, digital, and documentary exhibitions change every six months, the corridors double as screening rooms with reclaimed cinema seats, and the lobby runs a permanent generative-art installation that reacts to sound and movement. Two serious culinary and music programs anchor the ground level and basement, making this as much a destination for locals as a place to sleep.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Periodic live sets and concerts in the basement listening bar, curated by musical director DJ Fred Everything. DJs are selected based on their vinyl collections and play full albums and extended selections on a high-end analog sound system. Jazz on Wednesdays and Thursdays; eclectic programming other nights.
Two curated exhibitions per year spread across all eight floors. Each floor gets its own artwork — digital animation, live action film, video games, documentary, and video installation. The inaugural show, 'Seeds of R/Evolution,' curated by Cheryl Sim of PHI, runs November 2025 through June 2026 and features 10 artists including Skawennati, Lisa Jackson, and Kosisochukwu Nnebe. Reclaimed cinema seats on each floor invite you to actually sit and watch.
A video series produced by the hotel exploring the artists, curators, and ideas behind each exhibition. Available on the hotel website at sonolux.ca/en/episodes.
A generative digital art piece created by Behaviour Interactive in collaboration with SonoLux. The visuals react in real time to music and visitor movement, shifting throughout the day as the energy of the lobby changes. It's a meditation on the origins of the universe, from the Big Bang to the future of technology.
