Why It Matters
One of the most expensive rural stays in Spain, a non-profit operation in a 15th-century heritage-listed palace, with a collaboration between the on-site bistró and Michelin-starred restaurant Monte. Featured in National Geographic Traveller Luxury Collection 2023, Condé Nast Traveller, Tablet Hotels, and Mr & Mrs Smith.
Solo Palacio is a 15th-century walled manor house — the Palacio de los Miranda-Quirós — converted into 11 luxury rural apartments in the tiny village of Llanuces, 40 minutes south of Oviedo. The whole design philosophy is wabi-sabi: deliberately imperfect restorations, beamed ceilings, exposed stonework, and a mix of European and Asian objects that somehow work together. And here's the thing that makes it genuinely unusual: it's a non-profit. After staff pay, running costs, and taxes, 11 cents of every euro goes back into local conservation and community projects.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Routes through valleys, lakes, and protected natural areas, including downhill-only options. Electric bike rentals available to make the mountain terrain accessible.
Up to 7 hours of canyoning in the surrounding natural area — waterfalls, crystal-clear plunge pools, natural stone slides. A serious day out.
Guided horseback rides through the Asturian hills, suitable for all levels from beginners to experienced riders. The hotel can arrange tours that double as a way to observe local conservation projects.
Rappelling descent into Cueva Huerta, the second-longest cave in Europe. Adapted to your experience level. For the curious and the daring.
A 2-hour experience with the non-profit association BURRU, dedicated to donkey protection and environmental conservation. Get up close to the animals in the Las Ubiñas Natural Park. 100% of proceeds go to BURRU. Perfectly on-brand for a non-profit hotel.
Convivial evening sessions around the fire — food, drink, and conversation. Something between a guided experience and a house party.
Curated mindfulness sessions offered as part of Solo Palacio's broader philosophy of slow living and intentional experience.
Multiple trails accessible directly from the property. The Bear Trail (Senda del Oso) is a 5-minute walk along old railway tracks. Las Xanas Gorge is a 25-minute route with a rock-carved path. Routes are free; guided options available.
A 4-hour guided tour inside an authentic Asturian mine, led by experienced miners. Mining defined this region for generations — this is an unusually immersive way to understand it.
Expert-guided tour of the region's pre-Romanesque architectural heritage, run in collaboration with the local university. Asturias has one of Europe's most remarkable concentrations of pre-Romanesque buildings.
Suitable for all ages. The reservoir is 15 minutes from Solo Palacio, set among mountains. A slower-paced activity that pairs well with the overall wabi-sabi ethos of the stay.
A nod to the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy underpinning the hotel's entire design concept. Quietly becoming one of the most talked-about experiences at the property.
