Why It Matters
First Soho House in continental Europe, operating in a building that housed the East German Politburo. Damien Hirst spray-painted the lobby shark in five minutes during the opening party in 2010. The original Politburo room survives with its original wood paneling and is available for private hire.
The first Soho House to open on the European continent, this Berlin outpost landed in Mitte in April 2010, taking over a Grade II-listed Bauhaus building from 1928 that has lived many lives — department store, Hitler Youth headquarters, East German Communist Party seat — before becoming an 8-floor members' club and hotel. Inside: 1970s-inspired interiors, a Damien Hirst spray-painted shark in the lobby, a heated rooftop pool with Berliner Fernsehturm views, a Cowshed spa with hammam, and 65 bedrooms plus 20 apartments and four lofts. Non-members can book rooms and eat at Cecconi's on the ground floor, but full club access requires membership.
