Sentinel
Historic boutique with a Pacific Northwest creative edge. Dark green walls, rich leather sofas, dark wood furnishings, and framed pop art coexist with original 1909 terracotta detail. It reads like a Portland intellectual's private club.
Book a Terrace Studio Suite if budget allows — the rooftop fire pit terrace is the hotel's best-kept feature
Why It Matters
Two National Register of Historic Places buildings in one hotel. The 1909 East Wing is considered one of the most architecturally daring buildings ever built in Oregon. Gus Van Sant filmed parts of My Own Private Idaho here. Named #9 in Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 Top 10 Hotels in the Pacific Northwest. AAA Four Diamond property. Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and welcoming Hilton Honors members.
The Sentinel sits inside two connected National Historic Landmark buildings in Portland's West End — the 1909 Seward Hotel (East Wing) and the 1923 Elks Lodge (West Wing). Arts and Crafts architecture with glazed terracotta exteriors, mahogany paneling, Lewis and Clark lobby murals, and those robot-like stone sentinel sculptures along the roofline that gave the hotel its name. Provenance Hotels bought it in 2012, pumped in $6 million, and reopened it as the Sentinel in 2014. Three distinct dining venues on-site, a curated art collection, and a genuinely Portland-flavored amenity program.
