Sengokubar
Contemporary minimalist meets Japanese slow-living. Art-forward — para-art installations throughout from Suminasu Inc. (artists with disabilities from Saga). Intimate, quiet, private. More design hotel than traditional ryokan in feel, but the bathing culture is fully authentic.
The restaurant takes reservations from non-hotel guests via TableCheck — worth booking even if you're just passing through Hakone
Why It Matters
One of the few properties in Hakone where every suite comes with its own private onsen, dry sauna, and adjustable water bath — all fed by Owakudani spring water. Added to the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels selection. Can also be entirely bought out as a private estate for up to 15 adults.
Sengokubara COCON is a five-suite luxury ryokan sitting 800 meters above sea level in Hakone's Sengokuhara highland, born from a complete renovation of a former company facility. The property spans a 3,300㎡ garden and pairs serious Japanese bathing culture — think Owakudani hot spring water piped directly into every room, a herbal bath blended from 12 local plants, and semi open-air communal baths beside a miniature bamboo garden — with a design sensibility that leans hard into European furniture brands like Edra, Poltrona Frau, and Bonaldo. Dinner is modern French from an open kitchen, breakfast is traditional Japanese. Only 15 rooms' worth of guests total will ever be here on any given night, which is the whole point.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Concierge team provides suggestions for nearby galleries, museums (Pola Museum, Lalique Museum), and walking routes. Free hotel shuttle covers Kowakidani and Togendai stations, plus local attractions within a 15-minute radius.
Wander the 3,300㎡ property grounds, which include a miniature bamboo garden, herb garden with seasonal plantings, and open lawn areas. Each section shifts with the seasons — the susuki grass fields directly outside the gate peak in golden autumn color.
The property keeps mascot goats in a yard near the main gate — a quirky and surprisingly charming touch that guests consistently mention. Worth a visit on arrival or after a morning bath.
The hotel sits within a highland forest area with walking routes into the surrounding Sengokuhara woodland. Staff can suggest routes and nearby gallery and studio stops.
Para-art installations and design pieces created by artists from Suminasu Inc. (Saga Prefecture, which supports independence of individuals with disabilities through art) are displayed throughout the property. All artwork and select furniture pieces are available for purchase via the concierge.
The first-floor lobby shop stocks original COCON products, local items, and artworks. A good stop on checkout morning.
