Book the Suite 1973 if budget allows — it was formerly the apartment of the original owner Aunt Anna, and has two private loggias with unobstructed lake views

Why It Matters

Named to Monocle Travel TOP 50 as 'Best for Lakeside Luxury' and cited by The Guardian as one of the five best lakeside hotels in the world. The hotel is a rare intact specimen of 1970s Italian Alpine modernism — the mayor of Kaltern reportedly refused to sign the building permit, thinking it didn't fit the landscape. He was wrong. It now attracts architecture pilgrimages from across Europe.

Seehotel Ambach is a 1970s modernist landmark perched on the northern shore of Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol — Italian by address, Alpine by soul. Architect Othmar Barth designed it in 1973 as a white concrete ship anchored at the lake's edge, with floor-to-ceiling glass, white loggias, and terraces that sweep toward the water like ship decks. The interiors are a working museum of Italian Bel Design: Vico Magistretti's Selene chairs, Tobia Scarpa wall lamps, Mario Bellini coffee tables — all meticulously restored, not replaced. In 2018 a second building, the Badehaus, was added by architect Walter Angonese as a dark-timber counterpoint to the hotel's white concrete, housing the pool, saunas, and whirlpool.

The flagship suite, formerly lived in by the original owner Aunt Anna. Fully renovated by architect Walter Angonese, it occupies a south-facing corner of the second floor. Two connected rooms, open-plan living and sleeping in bleached American pine. Patricia Urquiola's spaghetti garden chairs for Moroso, Selene chairs by Vico Magistretti, and a Shogun lamp by Mario Botta make this feel like a curated gallery as much as a bedroom. Two separate loggias give the best lake panorama in the hotel.
