Schlosshotel Kronberg
Historic English country house meets royal palace. British designer Nina Campbell oversaw the rooms, done in a classic antique-and-chandelier style with intricate wallpapers. Not sleek or minimal — if you want glass and concrete, look elsewhere. The fireplace hall in the lobby, the rose garden outside, and the afternoon tea in Empress Victoria's library set the tone.
Ask for a room on the first floor — these are the former living apartments of the Empress herself.
Why It Matters
One of the few hotels in Europe where guests sleep inside actual royal apartments. Queen Victoria, Tsar Nicholas II, and Edward VII all visited this exact castle. Empress Friedrich's original antique and art collection still hangs in the halls. It has its own estate winery (Prinz von Hessen), an 18-hole championship golf course in the castle grounds, and 7 grand function rooms. 70+ years as a hotel and still family-managed by the House of Hesse.
This is a real castle, not a hotel built to look like one. Schlosshotel Kronberg occupies Schloss Friedrichshof, completed in 1893 for Empress Victoria Friedrich — eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and widow of the German Emperor Friedrich III. Her great-grandson, Donatus Landgrave of Hesse, opened it as a hotel in 1954, and the House of Hesse still runs it today. The empress's original art collection remains on the walls: paintings by Rubens, Titian, and Gainsborough, plus Limoges porcelain, gilded Venetian mirrors, antique bronzes, and stained-glass windows. Guests don't just sleep near history — they sleep inside it.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The Golf- und Land-Club Kronberg sits directly in the castle's 58-hectare grounds — guests walk out to it from the hotel. The course was created when Donatus Landgrave of Hesse had the park converted into a golf course, carefully working around the valuable old-growth tree population. Frankfurt skyline glimpses from the greens are a nice bonus.
A resident castle historian accompanies guests on a tour through the manor, explaining the art collection, Empress Victoria Friedrich's personal history, and the building's architectural significance. The collection — Rubens, Titian, Gainsborough, Flemish tapestries, Limoges porcelain — is dense enough that the guided context genuinely adds value.
Periodic champagne brunch events on the castle's south-facing terrace, overlooking the golf course and gardens. Popular summer event on the hotel's calendar.
Served in Empress Victoria's personal library on weekends. Traditional format in a room that has barely changed since the 1890s.
The hotel periodically hosts special dinners with invited guest chefs, pairing their menus with wines from the Prinz von Hessen estate. Popular with Frankfurt-area food enthusiasts and overnight guests. Booking via the hotel events page.
The hotel's own estate winery, Prinz von Hessen, produces wines served throughout the hotel. Tastings can be arranged. The sparkling wine from the estate is used as a welcome amenity in the Gourmet package.
On-site fitness equipment available to hotel guests.
The 58-hectare castle grounds include a terraced Italian rose garden, centuries-old trees, and walking paths that also run into the adjacent Taunus Nature Park. Open to guests at all times. Dogs are welcome.
The hotel runs organized summer picnics in the castle park. Bookable via the hotel directly or as part of a voucher package.
