Why It Matters
First high-end boutique hotel to open in San Francisco in over a decade when it launched in 2017. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and was designed by Albert Pissis, the city's premier Beaux-Arts architect. Kelly Wearstler handled all 131 rooms plus public spaces — that kind of full-property commission from a designer of her stature is genuinely rare. San Francisco Proper Hotel lives inside a 1904 Beaux-Arts flatiron building on Market Street — one that has survived earthquakes, fires, and a parade of name changes. Kelly Wearstler's interior design is the main event: deep colors, custom wallcoverings drawing from vintage European graphics, vintage Scandinavian rugs over solid oak floors, found furniture, and local Bay Area artwork. It's bold, and it's clearly not trying to be anything other than itself. The rooftop bar Charmaine's sits 120 feet above the street and draws a crowd well beyond hotel guests.
