Saccharum Resort
Industrial-heritage-meets-coastal-wellness. Dark, moody lobby (some guests find it too dim), earthy browns and sage greens throughout, overtly design-forward. Not a light Mediterranean whitewash. More of a dramatic clifftop statement.

Why It Matters
Designed by Nini Andrade Silva — Madeira's most celebrated interior designer — and built on an actual former sugar cane mill site, with the full heritage concept executed at every touchpoint from the spa's mosaic-tile pool to the carpets' texture referencing factory floors. Awarded the Green Key sustainability label in 2025.
Built on the site of a former sugar mill in Calheta on Madeira's southwest coast, Saccharum is a 5-star design resort conceived by local architecture firm RH+ and interior designer Nini Andrade Silva — the name behind many of Portugal's best contemporary luxury interiors. The industrial bones of the place are front and centre: copper pools evoking honey tanks, sugar cane murals behind headboards, restaurant walls lined with antique mill gauges and pipes. And yet it doesn't feel heavy. The 243 rooms mostly look straight out at the Atlantic, four pools (including a rooftop infinity pool that photographs extremely well) anchor the amenity stack, and the Ayurveda-inspired spa adds genuine substance to the wellness claim.
