RUNO Hotel Porvoo
Nordic design hotel with strong literary and cultural identity. Handcrafted details everywhere — salvaged farm equipment as towel racks, Kalevala carvings on the facade, original tiled fireplaces. Warm and personal rather than corporate. The ground floor lobby feels genuinely inviting, with big sofas and art by young Finnish painters.
Book the Attic Sauna for private use (12:00–15:00 or after 21:00) — it's a much better experience than the shared slots.
Why It Matters
Finland's sole Michelin Key recipient as of 2025. The building's Art Nouveau facade carries Kalevala mythology carved in stone, and the interior is a full Studio Joanna Laajisto commission. Opened in 2021 by founder Erkka Hirvonen after 15 years of planning. Breakfast has been awarded best hotel breakfast in Finland. No pool, but the attic sauna with its custom Finnish soundscape journey is the real draw.
RUNO is Finland's first and only Michelin Key hotel, set inside the 1912 Valtimontalo building right at the gate of Porvoo's Old Town. The name means 'poem' in Finnish — fitting for a place where the national poet J.L. Runeberg once stayed in the inn that previously occupied the same corner. Designer Studio Joanna Laajisto overhauled the interior, layering earthy tones, hand-painted wall panels, and tables built from 300-year-old pine floorboards over the Art Nouveau bones of the building.
