Why It Matters

One of Zaha Hadid's last completed projects. The pool has a glass floor through which you can see the excavated ruins of the ancient Port of Ripetta. Alain Ducasse chose ROMEO Roma for his first and only restaurant in Rome. The piano nobile suites retain 17th-century frescoes.

ROMEO Roma is a 5-star boutique hotel inside the 16th-century Palazzo Capponi, a short walk from Piazza del Popolo. Zaha Hadid Architects shaped the interiors — all fluid curves, Carrara marble, and Macassar ebony — layered over a building that still has original Renaissance frescoes on its piano nobile and genuine Roman ruins beneath the pool. Alain Ducasse runs the restaurant here, his first in Rome, and the whole package adds up to something genuinely unlike any other hotel in the city.
