Why It Matters
Restaurant Ahlmanns holds a Michelin star under head chef Lasse Knickrehm, who was also named Rising Star of the Year 2024 by the gourmet community. The hotel sits directly next to the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament on the Kiel Fjord and is part of the Romantik Hotels collection — a curated group of owner-run European properties.
A 4-star superior hotel housed in a late-19th-century banker's villa on the edge of Kiel's Düsternbrook quarter, overlooking the Kiel Fjord. The Lessau family has run the place for years, and they've built something genuinely interesting: a Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant (Ahlmanns), a relaxed North German steak-and-grill (Kaufmannsladen), a proper bar, and a newly renovated spa called the Sanctum. Three wings — the historic Villa, the modern Marienflügel, and the park-adjacent Parkflügel — mean the room experience varies significantly depending on where you're placed. Not a flashy design hotel, but a place with real character and serious food credentials.

Set in the historic Villa, these rooms offer partly fjord-facing outlooks and are individually styled with sofas, window benches, or armchairs — there's a favourite corner in every one. Views can extend to the Kiel Fjord.

Multiple beaches — Schilksee, Strande, Laboe, Heikendorf, Falckensteiner — all reachable within 30 minutes. The Olympic marina at Schilksee and the cruise ship terminal at Falckenstein are within easy reach.
Convertible meeting rooms from 28 sqm (Blücher room) to 200 sqm (Fördesaal), all with natural light, A/C, and A/V equipment. The Seegarten room (80 sqm) has a fjord view.

Visit the 106-metre town hall tower (a nod to Venice's Campanile), walk the harbour promenade past lighthouses, and cross the Holtenau High Bridge over the Kiel Canal. Numerous regional craft manufactories also make for good browsing.
Sail the Kiel Fjord on the historic Förde steamers to Schilksee or Laboe, join a speed-sailing event, or hire a rowing boat. The hotel can assist with arrangements.
Every June, the world's largest sailing event takes over Kiel for over a week. The hotel is ideally located to watch the regatta, fireworks, windjammer parade, and live music stages. Next edition: June 20–28, 2026.
