am Brühl
Intimate, family-run heritage hotel with warm country-house character — think fireplace lounge, antique furnishings, hand-painted walls, and a courtyard that works as an outdoor living room in summer. Genuinely personal service without the stuffiness.
Always reserve a table at the Weinstube in advance — walk-ins are not guaranteed
Why It Matters
The buildings were once a liqueur distillery (the Harzer Likörfabrik), and the hotel still serves Harzgeist liqueur made from the original family recipe. The Weinstube restaurant is listed in Gault Millau and Falstaff. The separate gourmet space Le Mariage — a 1926 Art Nouveau villa across the street — seats only 20 guests for a seven-course tasting menu, October through March only.
A 4-star Romantik Hotel in the heart of Germany's UNESCO World Heritage city of Quedlinburg, spread across a cluster of lovingly restored, listed buildings — a former distillery with its Gründerzeit-era mansion, a seed-growing barn with a Prussian vaulted ceiling, and cast-iron columns surrounding a lush green courtyard. Rooms are hand-painted with harmonious colours and furnished with antique-style pieces that give the place a distinctly Mediterranean feel. Opened in 1992 and run since then by the same family, now in its second generation under Claudia and Hartmut Wiese.

Historic narrow-gauge steam trains running through the Harz mountains, including the 'Brocken-Express' that goes directly from Quedlinburg to the summit of the Brocken. The hotel recommends reserving in advance, especially for weekend trips.

An evening walking tour led by a character dressed as a medieval night watchman (formerly a highwayman from the Hakelwald forest), who leads guests through the old town telling macabre tales and obscure local history. Bookable directly at the hotel reception.
Europe's longest pedestrian suspension bridge at 458.5 m, spanning the Rappbode reservoir 75 m above the water. For the truly adrenaline-hungry, the 'GigaSwing' pendulum jump and a dual zip-line (Megazipline) operate from the same site.
Every Wednesday from June to August, the Weinstube courtyard becomes a BBQ buffet evening. Note that regular à la carte ordering is suspended on these nights. A popular summer ritual that fills up fast.
