Rhinefield House
Grand Victorian country house with genuine period character. Formal enough for a special occasion, relaxed enough for muddy-boot forest walks. Dog-friendly, family-friendly, and genuinely popular for weddings and milestone celebrations.
Book the Walker Suite if budget allows — it was the original lady's bedroom and the roll-top bath with forest views is exceptional
Why It Matters
The only AA Four Red Star hotel in the New Forest. The Alhambra Room — a meticulous recreation of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, encrusted with Persian onyx, Venetian glass, and copper worked by Moorish craftsmen — is arguably the most extraordinary private dining room in Hampshire. The Armada Restaurant holds 2 AA Rosettes.
A late 19th-century Tudor-Gothic mansion sitting at the end of a driveway lined with Canadian redwoods and copper beeches, deep inside the New Forest National Park. The architecture is serious — turreted, red-bricked, with mullioned windows — and the interior doubles down with wood panelling, chandeliers, and the jaw-dropping Alhambra Room (a copper-and-onyx replica of the Granada palace). It's the only AA Four Red Star hotel in the New Forest, which means 50 individually named rooms, a spa, two restaurants, and 40 acres of private grounds.

Traditional afternoon tea served in the Lounge Bar or on the terrace. Taylors of Harrogate teas, homemade cakes, warm scones, and patisseries. The menu changes seasonally. A champagne upgrade is available.
A private outdoor BBQ with a dedicated chef and waiter, panoramic views of the grounds, and a gazebo with blankets for the evening. A genuinely special option for groups.
Traditional croquet on the manicured lawns. One of those quintessential country house activities that actually gets used here.
Bike hire is available with 24 hours' notice. The New Forest has some of the best flat cycling in England — ideal for spotting wild ponies and deer. Routes to Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst village both accessible.
Trails start directly from the hotel grounds. The hotel recommends a 7-mile circular walk through woodland to Lyndhurst, and 30–45 minute trails around Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. Wild ponies, deer, and ancient oaks all reachable on foot.
Pony trekking available in the surrounding New Forest — the hotel can advise on local providers.
Seasonal outdoor pool open May to October, set against the mansion facade and surrounded by woodland. Sunloungers and umbrellas on the terrace.
On-site outdoor tennis courts available for guests.
