RELAIS SAINT GERMAIN
Left Bank literary charm. Think exposed beams, period furniture, and fake-fur throws on king beds. It's warm and family-run — Camdeborde describes it as 'a family guest house' rather than a hotel. No corporate polish. Staff know your name by day two.
Book well in advance — rooms fill up months ahead and there are only 22 of them
Why It Matters
Owned and shaped by Yves Camdeborde, one of the founding fathers of bistronomy in France. The attached Le Comptoir du Relais was for years the hardest table to get in Paris — hotel guests skip the queue. Rooms are named after the writers who defined the Latin Quarter's literary legend.
A 22-room, 4-star boutique hotel in a late-16th century building on the Carrefour de l'Odéon, built around the vision of chef Yves Camdeborde, who bought it in 2004. Not one room is the same — all are individually decorated and named after a literary figure (Hemingway, Balzac, Proust, Joyce). The ground-floor Le Comptoir du Relais is a Saint-Germain institution. Hotel guests get priority access, which is the real perk: the place doesn't take reservations and the queue runs down the street.
