Relais de Chambord
Contemporary minimalist country boutique. Warm tones and modern furniture inside a heritage building — no chintz, no hunting trophies. The double-height lobby has antler-shaped twig installations as a nod to the surrounding wildlife reserve. Calm and understated rather than opulent.
Book a castle-view room or the Toue boat suite — courtyard rooms miss the point entirely
Why It Matters
Literally the only place you can sleep inside the Chambord estate. Guests have the castle grounds entirely to themselves after the day-trippers leave — walking the illuminated parkland at night with no crowds is genuinely rare. The floating boat suite (La Toue du Relais) moored right on the Cosson River with the castle as a backdrop is one of the more unusual rooms in France.
The only hotel inside the 5,440-hectare Domaine de Chambord estate, sitting directly across the Cosson River from the largest Renaissance château in France. French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte overhauled the building — a historic coaching inn on a classified Historical Monument site — and reopened it in 2018 as a 55-room contemporary boutique hotel. The aesthetic is deliberately minimalist: clean lines, warm velvet, wood, Sottsass ceramics, and photographic murals of the castle's stonework. Location is everything here, and it delivers completely.
