Rackmers-Hof Hotel garni
Quiet countryside retreat with refined Frisian character. Think heritage architecture, private gardens, personal service from owner Marianne Roeloffs, and a strong emphasis on privacy and space. No lobby bar, no restaurant hustle. It's genuinely calm.
Request the in-suite breakfast the evening before — a proper lie-in with breakfast delivered to your terrace is worth it
Why It Matters
Built in 1840 by a whaling captain, it remained a working farm until 1970. Today it's an all-suite-only property on a hard-to-reach North Sea island, listed with Tablet Hotels and the Michelin Guide. The Rackmers Refugium — a fully private spa you can book for 4 hours — is a genuinely unusual touch.
A 180-year-old former sea captain's estate, family-owned for seven generations and operating as an all-suite hotel since the 1970s. Every one of the 15 Private Suites comes with a full kitchenette, and three of the four buildings are traditional reed-thatched. The property sits in the quiet Frisian village of Oevenum at the heart of the North Sea island of Föhr — a place known for its mild climate and flat green marshland.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Standard bikes and e-bikes available for hire, must be pre-ordered before arrival. Föhr has around 200km of well-maintained cycle paths across flat marshland.
E-bike hire, pre-order required, minimum 3-day rental. Good option for covering the island's many cycle routes without effort.
The Golf Club Föhr is less than 5km from the hotel on the island's southern coast. A 27-hole course founded in 1925 with doglegs, bunkers, terraced greens, and water hazards — widely considered one of the finest courses in northern Germany. Hotel guests can access greenfee discounts; tee times should be booked well in advance via PC-Caddie app.
Föhr's flat landscape and Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage location make it ideal for walking and hiking. The wider island offers watersports including sailing, surfing, and kite surfing from the beaches.
Small but functional fitness room with treadmill, ergometer, and cross-trainer. Complimentary for all guests.
