Why It Matters
It is the first Pousada de Portugal, opening in 1951 inside a castle given by King D. Dinis to Queen Santa Isabel as a wedding gift in 1282. The building has architectural elements dating to the 9th century and is considered part of one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. Guests staying in the tower rooms get private access to the rampart walk after the day-trippers leave.
Pousada Castelo Óbidos is a small, government-heritage hotel actually inside the walls of Óbidos' 12th-century castle — one of Portugal's official Seven Wonders. Since 1951 it has been the flagship property of the Pousadas de Portugal network, the first classified historical monument ever converted to a pousada. There are only 17 rooms split between the castle building itself and the adjacent Casa do Castelo annex, making it one of the smallest pousadas in the country.

Large Family Cottage
The only room category designed for families, sleeping up to 4 adults plus 1 child under 12. Located in the Casa do Castelo annex. Features a living area with sofa, TV, and a fireplace alongside the main bedroom. Separate shower, sink, and mirror in the bathroom.
Double + extraSpecial Suite
The castle's showpiece rooms — three suites located in the castle keep's massive stone towers. Medieval decor is at its most pronounced here: thick stone walls, four-poster beds, chandeliers, and a sense that you are genuinely inside history. Views are panoramic over the village and surrounding countryside. Worth noting: Michelin Guide confirms all guest rooms are lit with chandeliers and stocked with high-end bed linens and bath products.
Standard Cottage
Located in the Casa do Castelo annex next to the castle, not inside the castle building itself. Colourful and individually styled with wooden-beam ceilings; more spacious than the equivalent castle room. Good for guests who want the address without the medieval constraints of tiny castle windows.
Suite Cottage
Suites in the Casa do Castelo annex with a separate living room area featuring sofa and coffee table. Some units have a fireplace. Historical features like ogival doors, vaulted ceilings, and wood panelling feature in certain units. Bigger footprint and more comfortable for longer stays.
Superior Castle
Superior rooms inside the castle itself — the pick of the 'Castelo' category. These command a premium over the classic castle rooms and include some with fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, and direct access to the rampart terrace. Rooms are named after Portuguese royalty; QR codes on each door unlock stories about the king or queen assigned to the room.
Superior Room Cottage
Larger superior rooms in the Casa do Castelo wing. Spacious and lighter than the castle rooms, individually styled, some with wooden roof detailing and a private terrace. A good balance of comfort and character.

Access to the 1,565-metre perimeter wall walk is available to hotel guests — a significant perk, as it can be done in the quiet of early morning or at dusk after day-trippers leave. No barrier on the wall edge, so not suitable for small children.
The Bom Sucesso Golf Course and Golf Club Praia d'El Rey are both close to Óbidos, and the hotel can arrange access. Golf is not on-site.

Every July, Óbidos hosts the Grande Mercado Medieval — costumed parades, jousting knights, troubadours, fire-eaters, a craft market, and medieval food and drink in pewter mugs. The castle is the backdrop and the atmosphere from the ramparts is exceptional.
February to March each year, the village fills with chocolate workshops, show cooking, street food, and even chocolate-inspired fashion shows. Draws large crowds so book rooms well ahead.
Tastings of local produce, including the area's wines and the famous Ginjinha de Óbidos cherry liqueur, served in a chocolate cup as is tradition in the village.
