Why It Matters

One of the few hotels in Porto with a coherent, architect-designed concept tied to the city's actual history. The Baquet Theatre opened in 1859 on this exact site, and the hotel honors that legacy with genuine flair. Il Basilico's wood-fired pizza oven under a glass ceiling pulls in locals, not just hotel guests. The entrance doors are inscribed with lines from Portuguese poet Almeida Garrett — a detail that sets the tone immediately.

Built on the site of the 1859 Baquet Theatre in Porto's historic theater district, PortoBay Teatro is a 74-room boutique hotel that wears its theatrical heritage without going overboard. Designed by Nini Andrade Silva Atelier, the interiors lean into mid-century Hollywood glamour — burnt ochre walls, oxidised metal, costume cabinets by the lifts, spotlight-style lighting, and a giant black-and-white mural of a theater audience staring back at you from the restaurant wall. Fully refurbished in 2021 with Nordic-inflected touches (light wood paneling, natural fabrics), it now feels fresher and more modern without losing its distinct personality.
