Why It Matters
One of only a handful of original 1946 Pioneertown structures still in operation. Gene Autry used Room 9 as his poker room. The motel is listed in both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels, has been featured in Architectural Digest, and is the only off-highway hotel property in the Joshua Tree area. The adjacent Red Dog Saloon (sister property) and legendary Pappy & Harriet's are steps away.
Built in 1946 as a waypost for Hollywood Western stars filming on location, Pioneertown Motel is now a boutique desert property owned by brothers Mike and Matt French. Nineteen rooms spread across original plank buildings made of railroad sleepers, with custom handcrafted furniture, beamed ceilings, cowhide rugs, and zero TVs. The vibe is lo-fi and intentional — you're here for dark skies, desert hikes, and live music at Pappy & Harriet's, which is a short walk from your door.

Double Twin Room
Same high-desert aesthetic and custom-built character as the other room types, with two twin beds. A good option for friends traveling together or those who need a bit more flexibility.
Two TwinsKing Room
Housed in the original 1946 plank buildings, these rooms have beamed ceilings, chunky wooden furniture, rustic woven throws, cowhide rugs, and Grateful Desert bath products. No TV — that's by design. King rooms at the rear of the property look out over juniper-dotted desert all the way to the San Bernardino mountains.
KingQueen Room
Same Western-meets-contemporary design as the King rooms with vintage charm, custom furniture, and rustic character. No TV, free WiFi, A/C and a mini fridge for storing provisions.
QueenRoom 9 — The Poker Room
The most historically loaded room in the motel. Gene Autry used this room as his poker room while filming in Pioneertown and reportedly played cards here until sunrise. Same design language as the other King rooms, but with a singular piece of history attached to it.

The Red Cabin
A separate historic cabin on Mane Street, originally built in 1946 as the Pioneertown land sale office. It has its own living room with a leather sectional sofa, a kitchen with terracotta tile countertops, a wood-fired stove, a front porch, and an antler chandelier. Right next to the Red Dog Saloon and a short walk to Pappy & Harriet's. Guests rave about the large backyard.

Hammocks strung between wooden posts in the desert garden. The go-to way to spend a lazy afternoon at the motel.
Over 30,000 acres of protected land start right in the motel's backyard. The preserve is far less crowded than Joshua Tree NP and offers exceptional desert trailheads. The motel's owners call it the best-kept secret in Pioneertown.
