A 450-year-old former drovers' inn sitting on the edge of Berkshire's Valley of the Racehorse — think flagstone floors, an open fire in the bar, taxidermied fox in the corner, and racing prints on every wall. Young's Pubs took over in January 2022 and added some polish without erasing the soul. Fourteen rooms come fitted with Hypnos mattresses, Egyptian cotton linens and Bramley toiletries, and the kitchen holds an AA Rosette for good reason: produce comes straight from North Wessex Downs farmers, cheesemongers and Cornwall's Flying Fish Seafood.

The top-of-the-range option — same character as the Boutique rooms but with more space. Spread across ground and first floors, several have garden views and a handful come with Juliette balconies. Mr & Mrs Smith calls these their favourite for families or anyone wanting more room to breathe.

The core room category — perfectly sized for two, spread across ground and first floors. Some have space for a cot or fold-out bed and all can accommodate up to two dogs. Bramley toiletries and a Nespresso machine elevate the experience nicely.
Boutique Twin
Ground floor twin room — ideal for two friends or siblings travelling together. Space for a cot for little ones or a fold-out bed for older kids. Dog-friendly too.
Cosy
The smallest rooms in the house, with courtyard views. Genuinely compact — best suited to a solo traveller or a couple who won't be spending much time inside. No honesty bar or Nespresso, but all the core comforts are there.
