Why It Matters
It is the first and only hotel to occupy Plaza Mayor, Madrid's most famous square. The underground spa in original coal cellars is genuinely unlike anything else in the city center. Almost half of the 89 rooms face the square with small balconies — a view that very few hotels anywhere can offer.
The first hotel ever to open on Madrid's Plaza Mayor, occupying two merged 17th-century buildings — the historic Casa de la Carnicería and a former fire station. Pestana Group won the public tender in 2019 after a three-year pursuit, and the result is a genuinely special property that wears its age openly: exposed brick walls, herreriano staircases, Islamic-art-inspired details, and colorful expressionist design accents referencing Goya and Velázquez. Rooms have Nespresso machines, 49-inch Smart TVs, and walk-in showers, so you're not roughing it in a museum. The real standout spaces are below and above ground: a subterranean spa and pool set inside original coal cellars with vaulted brick ceilings, and a rooftop bar and pool with panoramic views over Madrid's historic skyline.

Deluxe Grand View Plaza Mayor
A larger Deluxe configuration that can accommodate up to 4 adults and 1 child, making it one of the few genuinely family-friendly room types. Faces the square with a sitting area and sofa.
Deluxe Plaza Mayor
Proper Plaza Mayor-facing rooms with a balcony, more floor space than the Superior tier, a sofa or seating area, and blue-and-white tile accents that nod to traditional Spanish craft. One of the most requested room types in the hotel.
Loft Atic
A top-floor attic loft room with a distinctive open-plan layout, blue headboard, and mirrored walls. Has a bathroom with dual sinks. The elevated position gives you rooftop proximity. Quirky and spacious — a good alternative to a suite for solo travelers or couples who want character over square footage.
Plaza Mayor Suite
The hotel's top room type — a full suite facing the Plaza Mayor with a balcony window in the bathroom, meaning you can literally soak in the bathtub while looking out over the square. Living room with sofa and chairs, bedroom with blue-and-white tile headboard, and dual-sink bathroom with a magnifying mirror. This is the room to book for a special occasion.
Plaza Mayor Superior
Same superior-level room but positioned to face the square. Balcony windows open onto the Plaza Mayor — the Felipe III equestrian statue in the center, the Casa de la Panadería frescoes straight ahead. Worth the upgrade over a standard Superior.
Suite
A full suite with a separate living room (exposed brick wall feature, sofa, desk, TV), bedroom, and a large bathroom with double sinks and a bathtub. The brick wall in the living area is a genuine heritage detail from the original building.
Superior
A step up from Classic with a blue-headboard signature aesthetic, mirrored accents, and slightly more floor space. Walk-in shower with magnifying mirror, Nespresso machine, and desk. Some have balconies.
Superior Plus
A broader Superior category with the same design language but added space and amenities. Sound-proof windows, open-concept or walk-in bathroom configuration in some units. Good choice for longer stays.
