Periscope Hotel
Minimalist urban art hotel. Think deep grays, flashes of blue, wooden floors, and clean lines throughout. Feels more like a design gallery you sleep in than a traditional hotel.
The 24/7 complimentary lounge includes Nespresso, sparkling water, soft drinks, fruit, and snacks — factor this into your budget when comparing hotels
Why It Matters
One of the few genuinely concept-driven hotels in Athens — a Dakis Joannou commission built around surveillance as social critique, now a Marriott Bonvoy Design Hotels member with a cult following among architecture and design enthusiasts.
A 22-room art-filled boutique hotel in Athens' upscale Kolonaki neighborhood, conceived by art collector Dakis Joannou and designed by deca Architecture. The whole place is built around the concept of urban surveillance — commissioned between 9/11 and the 2004 Athens Olympics, when CCTV cameras were taking over the city. Thirteen custom art installations run throughout the building, aerial photographs of Athens paper the ceilings, and a rooftop surveillance camera feeds live footage to the ground-floor lobby where guests can pan, tilt, and zoom at will.

Other installations include animated 3D films of giant animals strolling through Athens, a shadow-study mural on the facade, and postcard stands featuring the surveillance obelisks installed for the 2004 Olympics.
