Palihotel San Francisco
California boutique with an Edwardian shell — warm, design-forward, laid-back without being cheap about it. Think Craftsman-meets-contemporary with a heavy dose of local art.
Bar Maritime does not take reservations — walk in early on weekends or you will wait. Maritime Boat Club (the dinner restaurant within) books on Resy and is worth reserving in advance.
Why It Matters
One of the first Palisociety outposts outside of LA, it occupies a historic Union Square building that has been a local landmark for over a century. The brand's low-frills luxury approach translates well to San Francisco's design-conscious, tech-curious traveler base. The new Bar Maritime on the 2nd floor — helmed by alumni of Quince, Atelier Crenn, and Sorrel — has quickly made the property a destination beyond just its rooms.
A 82-room boutique hotel in a landmark 1912 building at the foot of the Stockton Street Tunnel — right where Union Square meets Chinatown and Nob Hill. The Palisociety brand's California-centric design playbook is on full display here: wood paneling, ceramic tiles, soft color palette, and deliberately mismatched furniture that feels curated rather than careless. Rooms skew small (Queen rooms start at 160 sq ft), but the in-room details punch above the price — Smeg fridges, Nespresso machines, Diptyque bath products, and walk-in rain showers. The on-site Bar Maritime, which replaced the former Fisher Loft in early 2025, adds a genuine reason to linger on the second floor.
